What the 7th house covers
The 7th house is the kalatra bhava, the house of the spouse and of marriage. It also covers business partners, contracts, open dealings with the public and the people we meet face to face.
It sits directly opposite the lagna, the ascendant, so it is the descendant: the point that shows the other person in any one-to-one bond.
Venus is the natural karaka, or significator, of the 7th house. So astrologers read any planet placed here alongside Venus, and alongside the 7th lord, before saying anything about partnership. A single placement is one thread in the reading, not the whole cloth.
What the Sun stands for
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra treats the Sun as the king among the planets and the significator of the soul, the father and authority. It stands for vitality, self-respect, leadership, government and dealings with people in high office.
Its nature is hot, dry and steady, and it seeks a place where it can be seen and respected.
How classical texts read the Sun in the 7th
Classical texts generally treat the 7th as a less easy house for the Sun. The tradition associates this placement with a proud or self-willed temperament in partnership, a spouse of strong character, and some heat or ego clashes in married life.
Delays in marriage and a cool distance between partners are also mentioned in some readings.
There is a reason in the system itself. The Sun gains directional strength, dig bala, in the 10th house, and the 7th is the house opposite that. So the Sun here is read as having little directional strength.
At the same time, it aspects the lagna from the 7th, which the tradition links with a visible, self-assured manner and dealings with people in authority through partnerships.
What changes the reading
The sign matters a great deal. The Sun is exalted in Aries and in its own sign in Leo, which is read as easing many of the harder themes. In Libra, the natural 7th sign of the zodiac, the Sun is debilitated, and astrologers look more closely at the rest of the chart.
Conjunctions and aspects from Jupiter, Venus, Saturn or the nodes change the tone as well.
Astrologers also look at where the 7th lord sits and how strong it is, the condition of Venus, and the navamsha (D9) chart, which is the main divisional chart for marriage questions.
The running dasha shows when the 7th house themes come into focus. Readings are judged from the whole chart, never from one placement.
How to check it in your own chart
Make your free kundli on MyKundli with your date, time and place of birth. In the chart, look at which sign your 7th house holds, which planet rules that sign, and where that lord sits.
Then note every planet in the 7th, including the Sun, and its sign. That gives you the starting points an astrologer reads together.
