What Dev Uthani Ekadashi is

Dev Uthani Ekadashi, also called Prabodhini Ekadashi or Devutthana Ekadashi, is the eleventh tithi of the bright fortnight of the month of Kartika. In the tradition it ends the four months known as Chaturmas, in which Vishnu is said to rest, and the name means the day the god wakes. Many households keep a fast and a night of prayer, and the days that follow are often used for the ceremony of the tulsi plant.

This page does not describe what the day brings to anyone. It answers one question that changes every year: on which date does the Ekadashi tithi fall in 2026, and how was that worked out.

The date for 2026, worked out

A tithi is a stretch of time in which the Moon gains 12 degrees on the Sun. Ekadashi is the eleventh, when the Moon is 120 to 132 degrees ahead. By the chart engine, that window opens about 7:15 am Indian time on 20 November 2026 and closes about 6:30 am on 21 November 2026. So Ekadashi covers almost the whole daytime of 20 November 2026, which is the date most calendars in India will show.

The tithi comes from the angle between the Sun and the Moon, so it does not depend on the ayanamsa. The ayanamsa only matters for the month name: the Sun was in sidereal Libra at the new moon of 9 November 2026, 12:32 pm, the new moon that closes Ashwin, so the bright fortnight after it belongs to Kartika. The Sun enters Scorpio on 16 November 2026, during that fortnight, and the fortnight ends at the full moon of 24 November 2026, 8:23 pm, Kartika Purnima.

The tithi rule, and why some places differ

Most panchangs name a civil day after the tithi that is running at sunrise there. That rule gives a different answer in different cities this year, because the tithi changes close to sunrise on both mornings.

CitySunrise 20 NovTithi at sunriseSunrise 21 NovTithi at sunrise
Delhi6:47 amDashami6:48 amDwadashi
Mumbai6:48 amDashami6:48 amDwadashi
Kolkata5:52 amDashami5:52 amEkadashi

In Delhi and Mumbai the tithi is still Dashami at sunrise on 20 November and is already Dwadashi at sunrise on the 21st, because Ekadashi ends about 6:30 am. In Kolkata the sunrise on the 21st comes earlier than that, so Ekadashi is running at sunrise. Panchang makers handle this by other rules too, such as the day on which Ekadashi covers most of the daylight, and traditions differ on how to treat a day that begins with Dashami. For the day you keep the observance, follow your local panchang or temple.

Method and limits

Positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris through the same engine that draws the free kundli, with the Lahiri ayanamsa and the sunrise taken at the upper edge of the Sun with standard refraction. Times are Indian Standard Time and rounded down to the minute in the engine (7:16 am and 6:32 am for the tithi), then shown above to the nearest five minutes, because other panchangs can differ by a minute or so in the same tithi. The cities shown are examples, and a different place can move a sunrise by several minutes. The full list of settings is on the method page.

Your own chart on this day

The nakshatra finder and the current dasha tool show the facts of your chart for any birth. The Sun spends the second half of this fortnight in the sign Scorpio, and at the Kartika full moon the Moon stands in the nakshatra Krittika, the star the month is named after.

Calculated with the Lahiri ayanamsa and whole sign houses; every setting is on the method page. Last checked 2026-10-04.

Questions people ask

Is Dev Uthani Ekadashi on 20 or 21 November 2026?

The Ekadashi tithi runs from about 7:15 am on 20 November to about 6:30 am on 21 November, Indian time. Calendars that name the day by the daylight it covers show 20 November. Where sunrise on the 21st comes before the tithi ends, as in Kolkata, a sunrise-based calendar can show the 21st. Check your local panchang.

Which ayanamsa and tithi rule does this page use?

The Lahiri ayanamsa, and the tithi as every 12 degrees of the Moon's lead over the Sun. For the civil day it compares the tithi at sunrise, with the sunrise taken at the Sun's upper edge and standard refraction, for three example cities.

What is the difference between Dev Uthani and Devshayani Ekadashi?

Devshayani Ekadashi falls in the monsoon month of Ashadha and starts the four-month Chaturmas. Dev Uthani Ekadashi in Kartika ends it.

Does the date change with the ayanamsa?

Not the tithi, which comes from the angle between the Sun and the Moon. The month name can depend on it in years when the new moon is close to a sign boundary, and in 2026 the new moon is well inside Libra.
