Lagna (ascendant) calculator

Your lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. Enter your birth details to find it, its exact degree, and how much a small error in your birth time could change it.

What the lagna is

The lagna, or ascendant, is the point where the zodiac meets the eastern horizon at your birth place and time. The whole sign that point falls in becomes the first house, and the other eleven signs follow in order as houses two to twelve. Everything in a Vedic chart is read from it.

Unlike the Sun or Moon, the lagna turns through all twelve signs every day, about one sign every two hours. That is why two people born on the same day in the same city can have very different charts.

Why birth time matters most here

The lagna is the part of a chart most sensitive to the birth time. If your time is near the end of a sign, a few minutes of error can move you to the next lagna and every house with it. The result gives the degree of your lagna within its sign and tells you how many minutes earlier or later it would change.

If your recorded time is rounded, from memory or from a hospital that rounds to the hour, treat a lagna close to 0 or 30 degrees with care and check the time before trusting any chart reading.

Why the rising sign moves so quickly

The Earth turns once a day, so all twelve signs rise in turn over about 24 hours. That averages two hours a sign, but the average hides a lot of variation. At most places in India a sign takes somewhere between about an hour and a quarter and two and a half hours to rise, depending on the sign.

A handy rule is that the lagna moves about one degree every four minutes. That is why a few minutes can matter when your lagna sits close to the end of a sign.

Reading the degree

The degree tells you how far into the sign the eastern horizon was, from 0 to 30. Near either end, the rising sign was about to start or about to finish, and a small error in the birth time can change it. The result shows how many minutes earlier or later the lagna would change.

The degree also fixes the lagna in the navamsha chart, so astrologers who work with divisional charts are even more careful with birth time.

Finding or confirming a birth time

A hospital or municipal birth record is the strongest source, then a birth certificate, then a note a parent made at the time, then memory. Some certificates show the time the birth was registered and not the time it happened, and some hospitals round to the nearest five minutes or the nearest hour.

If your sources disagree by a few minutes, enter the one you trust most and choose the approximate option. The result then shows whether the lagna would change within that range.

What the lagna is used for

Every house in the chart is counted from the lagna, and each house takes its ruling planet from its sign. Questions about work, marriage or money are read through those houses, so the lagna is the first thing an astrologer checks. This page gives you the fact only. It does not interpret it.

Lagna, Moon sign and Sun sign

Your lagna describes the frame of the chart, your Moon sign is used for naming, matching and transits, and your Sun sign is the Western star sign. For the Moon sign use the moon sign calculator, and for the full chart with all houses make your free kundli. The nakshatra finder covers the Moon's star.

Calculated with the Lahiri ayanamsa and whole sign houses; every setting is on the method page. Last checked 2026-10-04.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate my lagna?

It needs your date, exact time and place of birth. The calculator works out which sign was rising on the eastern horizon at that moment and where in the sign.

Is lagna the same as ascendant?

Yes. Lagna is the Sanskrit word, and ascendant or rising sign is the English one for the same point.

Why do I need my exact birth time for the lagna?

Because the rising sign changes about every two hours, and near a sign boundary only a few minutes separate two lagnas.

What if my birth time is only approximate?

Choose the option that says the time is approximate. The result then shows whether the lagna would change within a few minutes of what you entered.

Does the lagna change if I use another ayanamsa?

It can, when the lagna degree is within a degree or so of a sign boundary. The method page lists the ayanamsa used here.

What does the degree of my lagna mean?

It is how far into the rising sign the eastern horizon was, from 0 to 30 degrees. Close to 0 or 30 means the sign was about to start or end, so a small error in birth time matters more.

Is my lagna the same as my Moon sign?

Only by chance. The Moon sign changes every two and a quarter days and the lagna every couple of hours, so the two agree for roughly one person in twelve.

Can twins have different lagnas?

Yes, if they were born far enough apart for the rising sign to change. Twins born a few minutes apart usually share it, but near a sign boundary they may not.

Can I find my lagna without a birth time?

Not reliably. Without a time the tool draws the chart for noon and marks the lagna as uncertain. The Moon sign and nakshatra are better first facts to look at.
