What your rashi is
Western astrology goes by the Sun, which is why people know their 'star sign' from their birth month. Vedic astrology gives most weight to the Moon, and the sign the Moon occupied is your rashi, or chandra rashi. It is the sign used for naming, for compatibility matching and for transit periods such as Sade Sati.
Because the Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days, your birth date alone is not enough. The result needs your time and place, and tells you if the Moon was close to a sign change.
Why your rashi may not match your sun sign
Two things differ. First, the Moon and Sun are in different signs most of the time. Second, the Vedic zodiac is sidereal, fixed to the stars, while the Western zodiac is tied to the seasons. The two have drifted about 24 degrees apart, so many people's Vedic Sun sign is the sign before the Western one they know.
The calculator shows both your Moon sign and your Sun sign on the sidereal zodiac, so you can see the difference directly.
The twelve rashis
The sidereal signs are the same twelve as in the West, with Sanskrit names: Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Karka (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchika (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius) and Meena (Pisces). The result shows the English name, and this list matches it to the one your family may use.
Why the Moon sign is used so often
In Indian practice the Moon sign is what people mean by 'my rashi' when naming a child, checking a match or asking about a long planetary passage. Sade Sati, the seven and a half years in which Saturn moves through the sign before the Moon sign, the sign itself and the sign after, is counted from it. For that question you only need your rashi.
How close the Moon was to a sign change
The Moon changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days, covering about half a degree an hour. If your Moon was in the first or last 1.5 degrees of its sign, it was within about three hours of a change, so a few hours of error in the birth time can alter the answer. The result tells you when that applies.
If you do not know your birth time, the result still gives a sign for most birth dates. The Moon is only uncertain on the day it changes sign, and the calculator says so when that happens.
Reading the two signs side by side
The two signs in the result are both on the sidereal zodiac. If you were born in roughly the first 24 days of a Western sign, your Sun is usually in the earlier sign here, because the two zodiacs are about 24 degrees apart and the Sun moves about a degree a day. The Moon sign has no such everyday comparison, which is why many people find it new.
Moon sign and naming
Many families choose the first letter of a child's name from the Moon sign and the nakshatra together. The letter comes from the pada of the nakshatra, so the nakshatra finder is the better tool for that, and this page is the one for the sign. If the two ever seem to disagree, check the birth time first, because a Moon close to the end of a sign or a nakshatra is the usual reason.
Using your rashi
Your rashi is one fact, not the whole chart. For the ruling pattern of the whole sky at birth, make your free kundli. For the star the Moon sat in within that sign, use the nakshatra finder, and for the rising sign see the lagna calculator.
