What the 7th house covers
The 7th house is the kalatra bhava, the house of the spouse and of marriage. It also covers business partners, contracts, public dealings and close one-to-one bonds. It is the descendant, opposite the lagna, and shows how a person relates to another.
Venus is the karaka, or natural significator, of the 7th house. Astrologers read the 7th house, its lord and Venus together whenever a marriage or partnership question comes up, so Ketu in the 7th is never judged without also looking at Venus and the 7th lord.
What Ketu stands for
Ketu is the south lunar node, a shadow planet like Rahu. The tradition links it with detachment, renunciation, spiritual search, past habits, sudden breaks and things that feel incomplete or hard to name.
It is often compared with Mars in nature. Ketu is read as giving the results of the lord of the sign it occupies, and of planets conjunct it, so its sign lord matters a great deal.
How classical texts read Ketu in the 7th
Classical texts and later astrologers associate Ketu in the 7th with some distance or dissatisfaction in partnership, a feeling that something is missing, or a spouse who is private, spiritual or hard to read.
The tradition also links it with sudden changes in partnerships or contracts. Some astrologers read a quieter side as well: a bond that works best when it is not built on heavy expectation.
Ketu in the 7th always means Rahu in the 1st house. Astrologers read this axis as a strong drive to build and assert the self, shown by Rahu in the lagna, set against a looser, less certain hold on partners, shown by Ketu in the 7th.
Finding a balance between personal goals and shared life is the central theme here.
What changes the reading
The sign Ketu occupies and the strength of that sign's lord shape the reading most. Traditions differ on Ketu's exaltation and debilitation, with Scorpio and Sagittarius both cited for exaltation, so astrologers rely more on the dispositor.
Conjunctions change it too: Ketu with Venus or the 7th lord is read differently from Ketu alone, and Jupiter's aspect is read as giving it a gentler, more spiritual tone.
Astrologers also check where the 7th lord sits, the state of Venus, and the navamsha (D9) chart for marriage questions. The Ketu dasha or antardasha is often when these themes surface. The whole chart decides the reading, never one placement on its own.
How to check it in your own chart
Make your free kundli on MyKundli and open the house view. Look at which sign your 7th house holds, which planet rules that sign and where it sits, and which planets share the 7th with Ketu.
Note your 1st house too, where Rahu sits, then check the lord of Ketu's sign and your D9 chart before reaching a view.
Calculated with the Lahiri ayanamsa and whole sign houses; every setting is on the method page. Last checked 4 November 2026.
