What the 7th house covers
The 7th house is the kalatra bhava, the house of the spouse and of marriage. It also covers business partners, agreements, dealings with the public and the people we meet one to one.
It lies opposite the lagna, the ascendant, so it is the descendant: the point that shows the other person in a close bond.
Venus is the natural karaka, or significator, of the 7th house. Astrologers therefore read any planet here with Venus and with the 7th lord in mind. One placement is a single thread in the reading, never the full picture on its own.
What the Moon stands for
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra treats the Moon as the significator of the mind and the mother. It stands for feelings, memory, comfort, nourishment, the public and the way we respond to others.
The Moon changes quickly, so it is linked with moods, travel and a need for emotional security. A bright, waxing Moon is read as a natural benefic.
How classical texts read the Moon in the 7th
Classical texts generally read the Moon in the 7th with warmth. The tradition associates it with a pleasant, courteous manner, a liking for company and a spouse who is caring, attractive or gentle in nature.
Strong attachment to the partner is a common theme, and some readings link it with dealings in trade, travel or public work.
The Moon also aspects the lagna from the 7th, which the tradition connects with a soft, approachable presence. When the Moon is waning or afflicted, the same placement is read as bringing changeable feelings, sensitivity to the partner's moods or a restless search for emotional comfort in relationships.
What changes the reading
The Moon is exalted in Taurus, in its own sign in Cancer and debilitated in Scorpio, and each of these is read differently. Its phase matters too: a waxing, bright Moon is read more gently than a waning, dark one.
Conjunctions with Saturn, Mars, Rahu or Ketu, or aspects from them, change the tone, while Jupiter's aspect is read as steadying it.
Astrologers also check where the 7th lord sits, the condition of Venus, and the navamsha (D9) chart, the main divisional chart for marriage. The running dasha shows when these themes come forward.
Because the Moon is also the reference point for many readings, the chart from the Moon matters too. Readings are judged from the whole chart, never from one placement.
How to check it in your own chart
Make your free kundli on MyKundli with your date, time and place of birth. In the chart, look at which sign your 7th house holds, which planet rules that sign, and where that lord sits.
Then note every planet in the 7th, including the Moon, its sign and whether it is waxing or waning. Those are the starting points an astrologer reads together.
