What the 7th house covers
The 7th house is kalatra bhava, the house of the spouse and of marriage. It also covers business partners, contracts, open dealings with the public and the people we meet face to face.
It sits opposite the lagna, so it is the descendant: where the lagna describes the self, the 7th describes the other person. Venus is its natural karaka, the planet that signifies marriage and partnership in every chart.
What Mercury stands for
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra links Mercury with speech, intellect, writing, counting, trade and friends. It is the prince among the planets, quick, curious and adaptable, and it takes on the colour of the planets it joins.
Mercury gains directional strength in the 1st house, so the 7th is the point opposite its strongest direction. Like every planet, Mercury aspects the house seventh from itself, which from the 7th is the lagna.
How classical texts read Mercury in the 7th
Classical texts tend to read Mercury in the 7th kindly. Phaladeepika and Saravali associate it with a refined, well dressed and well spoken person, and with a partner who is attractive, clever or younger in manner.
Because Mercury rules trade, the placement is also read as suiting work done through partnerships, contracts, writing or dealing with the public.
The tradition also notes Mercury's restless side. Some astrologers read a need for mental connection in marriage, where conversation matters as much as feeling, and they watch for a changeable or overly analytical tone in close relationships when Mercury is under strain.
Mercury's aspect falls on the lagna, which is read as adding a lively, communicative quality to the person themselves.
What changes the reading
Sign and dignity come first. Mercury owns Gemini and Virgo, is exalted in Virgo and debilitated in Pisces, and these change the tone of the placement a good deal.
Mercury is always close to the Sun, so astrologers also check whether it is combust. Its neutral nature means a conjunction with Jupiter or Venus is read very differently from one with Saturn, Mars, Rahu or Ketu.
Astrologers then look at the 7th lord, where it sits and how strong it is, and at Venus as the karaka of marriage. For marriage questions the navamsha (D9) is read alongside the birth chart, and timing is judged from the running dasha. No single placement settles a reading; the whole chart does.
How to check it in your own chart
Make your free kundli on MyKundli and open the birth chart. Note which sign your 7th house holds, which planet rules that sign, and where that lord sits.
Then look at every planet in the 7th, including Mercury, and whether any of them are joined or aspected by others. Finally compare the same points in your navamsha (D9) chart.
