What the 7th house covers
The 7th house is kalatra bhava, the house of the spouse and marriage. It also covers business partners, contracts and agreements, open dealings with the public and the people we meet one to one.
It is the descendant, the point opposite the lagna, so it shows the other person in any partnership. Venus is its natural karaka.
What Jupiter stands for
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra treats Jupiter as the guru among the planets. It signifies knowledge, teachers, children, dharma, good counsel and growth.
In a woman's chart the tradition also reads Jupiter as a significator of the husband. Jupiter gains directional strength in the 1st house, so the 7th is the point opposite. It aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from where it sits.
How classical texts read Jupiter in the 7th
Classical texts generally read Jupiter in the 7th with warmth. They associate it with a spouse who is good natured, cultured or devoted, with a person who is courteous and respected in dealings, and with a liking for counsel and fair agreements.
Some astrologers add that the spouse may come from a teaching, advisory or religious background, or carry those values.
From the 7th, Jupiter aspects the 11th, the lagna and the 3rd. Its aspect on the lagna is often singled out: astrologers read it as giving the person a measured, ethical or generous outlook.
The aspect on the 11th touches gains and friendships, and the aspect on the 3rd touches siblings, courage and effort.
What changes the reading
Jupiter owns Sagittarius and Pisces, is exalted in Cancer and debilitated in Capricorn, so the sign in the 7th matters. Astrologers also check which houses Jupiter rules for the lagna, since a Jupiter that owns difficult houses is read differently.
Conjunctions with Rahu, Saturn or Mars, or aspects from them, change the tone, while Moon or Venus with Jupiter are read another way.
The 7th lord's position, Venus as karaka of marriage and the navamsha (D9) are always read alongside. For timing, astrologers look at the running dasha and at whether Jupiter or the 7th lord is active. One placement is never judged on its own; the whole chart decides.
How to check it in your own chart
Make your free kundli on MyKundli and open the birth chart. See which sign your 7th house holds, which planet is its lord and where that lord sits. Then note every planet in the 7th, including Jupiter, and any planets joining or aspecting it. Check the same points in your navamsha (D9) chart.
Calculated with the Lahiri ayanamsa and whole sign houses; every setting is on the method page. Last checked 4 November 2026.
