What the 7th house covers
The 7th house is kalatra bhava, the house of the spouse and marriage. It also covers business partners, agreements, open dealings with the public and close one to one relationships.
It is the descendant, opposite the lagna, so it shows the other person in any bond. Venus is its natural karaka, which makes this placement a special case.
What Venus stands for
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra links Venus with the spouse, marriage, love, beauty, the arts, music, vehicles, comforts and pleasures. It is the significator of the wife in a man's chart and of marriage in every chart.
Venus gains directional strength in the 4th house. Like every planet, it aspects the house seventh from itself, which from the 7th is the lagna.
How classical texts read Venus in the 7th
Classical texts associate Venus in the 7th with an attractive, pleasant or artistic spouse, with affection in marriage and with a liking for comfort, beauty and company.
Its aspect on the lagna is read as adding charm and grace to the person. The placement is also read as suiting work in partnership, design, the arts or dealing with the public.
Venus here is also a special case, because it is the karaka of the very house it occupies. The tradition has a principle often quoted as karako bhava nashaya, roughly that a karaka placed in the house it signifies can harm that house's matters.
Venus in the 7th is one of its most cited examples, along with Jupiter in the 5th. The usual explanation is that too much of one signification in one place can unbalance it.
Astrologers apply this principle with care, and many limit it. It is commonly read as carrying weight mainly when Venus is weak, afflicted or poorly placed, and as mild or absent when Venus is in its own sign, exalted or well supported. It is a point to weigh, not a verdict on marriage.
What changes the reading
Venus owns Taurus and Libra, is exalted in Pisces and debilitated in Virgo, so the sign in the 7th changes the tone a great deal. Venus always stays fairly near the Sun, so astrologers check combustion too.
Conjunctions and aspects from Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu are read very differently from those of Jupiter, Mercury or the Moon, and many texts note a stronger pull towards pleasure when Venus is joined by Mars or Rahu.
The 7th lord's position and strength are read alongside Venus. For marriage questions the navamsha (D9) is essential, and timing is judged from the running dasha. Astrologers never judge the 7th house from Venus alone; the whole chart decides, read as one picture.
How to check it in your own chart
Make your free kundli on MyKundli and open the birth chart. Note which sign your 7th house holds, which planet rules that sign and where that lord sits.
Then look at every planet in the 7th, including Venus, its sign and dignity, and any planets joining or aspecting it. Finally compare the same points in your navamsha (D9) chart.
