What the 7th house covers
The 7th house is the kalatra bhava, the house of the spouse and of marriage. It also covers business partners, contracts, open dealings with the public and anyone we face one to one, including rivals.
It sits opposite the lagna, the ascendant, so it is the descendant: the point that shows the other person in a close bond.
Venus is the natural karaka, or significator, of the 7th house. Astrologers read any planet here with Venus and the 7th lord in mind, so one placement is a single thread in the reading rather than the whole of it.
What Mars stands for and how texts read it in the 7th
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra treats Mars as the commander among the planets and the significator of courage, siblings and land. It stands for energy, drive, physical vigour, quick decisions, competition and the urge to act.
Its nature is hot and fiery. Besides the 7th house from itself, Mars also aspects the 4th and 8th houses from where it sits.
Classical texts generally treat Mars in the 7th as a demanding placement for partnership. The tradition associates it with a strong-willed or quick-tempered spouse, arguments and impatience in married life, and a passionate, direct approach to relationships.
Some readings also mention disputes with business partners or a combative style in public dealings.
From the 7th, Mars aspects the 10th house, the 1st house and the 2nd house. So the tradition also links this placement with a forceful, active presence, drive in work, and sharp speech within the family. These themes are read as tendencies, shaped by everything else in the chart.
Mars in the 7th and Manglik dosha
Mars in the 7th house is one of the placements counted for Manglik, or Mangal, dosha. In the common method, Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the lagna is counted, and many astrologers include the 2nd house as well.
They usually check the same houses from the Moon and from Venus too, so the count varies by method.
Astrologers also check several cancellation ideas before reading it. These include Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn), an aspect or conjunction from Jupiter, certain lagna and sign combinations named in the tradition, and whether both partners have a similar Mars placement.
Practice varies between regions and teachers, which is why charts are read as a whole.
What changes the reading
Mars is in its own sign in Aries and Scorpio, exalted in Capricorn and debilitated in Cancer, and each is read differently. Conjunctions and aspects from Jupiter or Venus are read as softening it, while Saturn or Rahu add other tones.
Astrologers also look at where the 7th lord sits, the condition of Venus, the navamsha (D9) chart for marriage questions, and the running dasha. Readings are judged from the whole chart, never from one placement.
How to check it in your own chart
Make your free kundli on MyKundli with your date, time and place of birth. In the chart, look at which sign your 7th house holds, which planet rules that sign, and where that lord sits.
Then note every planet in the 7th, including Mars, its sign and any planet with it or aspecting it. Those are the starting points an astrologer reads together.
