Positions of the Sun and Moon come from the same engine as the free kundli (sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsa). Panchang timings differ by city and by tradition: sunrise moves with the place, and some almanacs use other conventions for the sunrise, the ayanamsa or the calculation, so a time can differ by a few minutes from another source. What panchang is

Panchang (also written panchangam) is the Hindu calendar. The word means five limbs: the tithi (lunar day), the vara (weekday), the nakshatra (the star the Moon is in), the yoga and the karana.

Each one is a measurement of where the Sun and Moon are, so the whole panchang changes through the day and is worked out for a date and a place.

This page lists the five limbs for today, with the clock time each one begins and ends, plus the Moon sign, the Sun sign, sunrise, sunset, moonrise and the kaal windows.

How each value is worked out

  1. Tithi: the Moon's longitude minus the Sun's, in steps of 12 degrees. Thirty tithis make a lunar month, fifteen in the Shukla (waxing) paksha and fifteen in the Krishna (waning) paksha.
  2. Nakshatra: the Moon's longitude in steps of 13 degrees 20 minutes, 27 in all.
  3. Yoga: the Sun's and Moon's longitudes added together, in steps of 13 degrees 20 minutes.
  4. Karana: half a tithi, so a step of 6 degrees.
  5. Moon sign and Sun sign: the sign (30 degrees each) of the sidereal longitude.

The zodiac is sidereal with the Lahiri ayanamsa, and all clock times are Indian Standard Time (UTC+5:30). The moment a tithi or nakshatra changes is the same everywhere on Earth. What changes with the city is the sunrise that decides which tithi is counted for the day.

Rahu kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika kaal

These are windows from a fixed weekday rule, not from the Moon. The time from sunrise to sunset is split into eight equal parts, and for each weekday the rule picks one part for each window.

This page only states the clock times the rule gives. Because day length changes with the season and the city, so does the length of each window, about 1 hour 25 minutes at Delhi in October.

Why panchang timings differ by city and by tradition

Sunrise is earlier in Kolkata than in Mumbai by well over half an hour, so the sunrise tithi, the day's vara and every kaal window move with the city. That is why the city picker on this page changes the times.

Traditions also differ. Some almanacs measure sunrise from the centre of the Sun, some include refraction, some use a different ayanamsa, and some follow older Surya Siddhanta rules instead of modern astronomy (drik ganita).

The result is that two panchangs can differ by a few minutes in a tithi end, and sometimes name a different tithi for the day. This page states the convention it uses in the box above.

Yes. The Moon and Sun move all the time, so every limb and every time on this page is calculated again for each new day.

Does this page say what the day means for me?

No. It states the calendar facts and the clock times only. How a day sits against a person's own chart is a separate question, which an astrologer reads from your birth details.
