Where Shravana sits in the zodiac

The whole nakshatra lies in Capricorn. In degrees, Shravana stretches from 280.00 to 293.33, which reads 10°00′ Capricorn to 23°20′ Capricorn.

All of this is sidereal. The Lahiri ayanamsa moves the zodiac back from the Western one by about 24 degrees 13 minutes in 2026, and the circle is cut into 27 equal parts of 13 degrees 20 minutes. The 27 divisions are slices of the ecliptic, not the outlines of constellations. Shravana is marked by Altair, a bright star in the constellation Aquila, the eagle, with two fainter stars on either side of it. On the circle it follows Uttara Ashadha and comes before Dhanishta. The signs it touches are Capricorn.

The name Shravana

Shravana comes from a root meaning to hear, and the name is 'hearing' or 'the ear'. The same word is used for sacred hearing of the Vedas. It is the twenty-second nakshatra and lies wholly inside Capricorn.

Deity and symbol

Its deity is Vishnu, who is placed as preserver in the later tradition and who is already present in the Rigveda, where he takes three steps across the universe.

The symbol is an ear, sometimes drawn as three footprints, which refer to the three steps of Vishnu.

Ruling planet and the Vimshottari dasha

In the Vimshottari scheme Shravana is ruled by Moon. The nine lords go round in a fixed order, and Moon is given 10 years out of 120.

A birth with the Moon in Shravana begins partway through Moon's dasha. The part left is in proportion to the distance still to run: close to 10 years at the start, 5 at the middle, close to nothing at the end. After Moon the order runs Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus and Sun. The other nakshatras ruled by Moon are Rohini and Hasta. The dasha calculator shows the balance for your own chart.

The four padas of Shravana

Each nakshatra splits into four padas of 3 degrees 20 minutes. A pada matches one sign of the navamsha (D9) chart, and the four take four signs in a row.

In pada 1, from 10°00′ Capricorn to 13°20′ Capricorn, the navamsha sign is Aries. Names for this pada begin with Khi.

In pada 2, from 13°20′ Capricorn to 16°40′ Capricorn, the navamsha sign is Taurus. Names for this pada begin with Khu.

In pada 3, from 16°40′ Capricorn to 20°00′ Capricorn, the navamsha sign is Gemini. Names for this pada begin with Khe.

In pada 4, from 20°00′ Capricorn to 23°20′ Capricorn, the navamsha sign is Cancer. Names for this pada begin with Kho.

The first pada of Dhanishta then starts at Leo. Syllables follow the commonly printed lists, and regional lists differ slightly. For Shravana, the most common table gives Khi, Khu, Khe, Kho; some lists use Ju, Je, Jo, Gha.

Shravana in the sky and in the year

In the timing texts Shravana sits in the Chara (movable) category. The Sun enters it on 24 January 2026 in 2026 and leaves on 6 February 2026 (Indian time). The Moon crosses a nakshatra in about a day, between roughly 21 and 27 hours depending on how fast it is moving.

Shravana beside its neighbours

Every pada of Shravana lies inside Capricorn. The Moon stays in one sign for the whole of this nakshatra. In the full Vimshottari round, Moon is fourth of nine, occupying years 33 to 43. The three Moon nakshatras sit 120 degrees apart, and Shravana is the third of them.

Beside it, Uttara Ashadha belongs to Sun and Dhanishta to Mars, so each step round the circle moves to the next lord. Uttara Ashadha is Dhruva (fixed) while Shravana is Chara (movable), and Dhanishta is Chara (movable). The deities also change. Uttara Ashadha has the Vishvadevas, the universal gods, and Dhanishta has the eight Vasus, gods of the elements.

How to find out if your Moon is in Shravana

Look at the Moon's sidereal longitude at birth. A reading from 280.00 up to 293.33 degrees means the Moon was in Shravana. The Moon moves about half a degree an hour, so a birth within an hour or two of a boundary can land on either side if the time is slightly off. The nakshatra finder works it out from your date, time and place of birth.
